The Kenya Association of Travel Agents (KATA) held the Annual KATA AGM & Travel Convention 2024 , under the theme “Make the Connection.” This event encouraged open dialogue, constructive critique, and self-reflection among participants.

As our CEO stated, “We call the convention the Olympics of the industry in Kenya because it attracts key players across the travel sector. Key Highlights

Emphasis on Connectivity and Technological Advancement:

  • Dr. Kithitu underlined the necessity of embracing technological advancements like online platforms, artificial intelligence, and innovative management tools to streamline operations and enhance service offerings.
  • Stronger ties with affiliate associations and partners across borders were advocated to create a global network of collaboration and support.

Personalization and Expert Guidance:

  • CEO Nicanor Sabula emphasized providing personalized solutions and expert guidance to meet unique traveler needs.
  • The agenda included learning from industry leaders, sharing insights, exploring innovative strategies, and engaging with policymakers to advocate for the industry’s future.

Government Commitment to Tourism:

  • Tourism Secretary Dr. Patrick Bucha highlighted the government’s commitment to implementing the open skies policy and increasing direct flights to and from Kenya.
  • Recent initiatives include the launch of flights by China Southern Airline, Air Brussels, and Malaysia Air Asia, enhancing connectivity.
  • The Ministry’s project to market Kenya as the ultimate Home of Human Origins was introduced, aiming to showcase Kenyan archaeological and paleontological findings.

Kenya Airways’ Remarkable Turnaround:

  • Kenya Airways Group Managing Director Allan Kilavuka praised travel agents’ role in the airline’s transformation, recording a full-year operating profit of KShs 10.5 billion.
  • Kilavuka underscored aviation’s vital role in supporting jobs and contributing to GDP, highlighting investments in aviation infrastructure as beneficial for economic growth.

Intra-Africa Travel and Collaboration:

  • A round table discussion with leaders from various African travel agent associations emphasized the importance of collaboration in promoting intra-Africa travel.
  • Strategies to boost regional tourism, address common challenges, and leverage collective expertise were discussed.

Embracing AI and Technology:

  • Mr. Oscar Limoke from PAWA IT Solutions Africa highlighted the potential of AI in enhancing the travel industry.
  • AI applications such as personalized journey recommendations, 24/7 concierge services, and data-driven decision-making were encouraged.

Mental Health Awareness:

  • Dr. Neema Araka from Fitahi Consultancy emphasized the importance of mental health awareness in the workplace, linking mental health issues to physical symptoms and stressing the need for a supportive environment.

Domestic Airline Partnerships:

  • An aviation panel discussion redefined the partnership between travel agents and domestic airlines, focusing on the growth potential of the domestic market.
  • Enhanced incentive commissions for travel agents and addressing infrastructural issues at domestic airports were recommended.

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with KATA:

  • Kenya Airways formalized an MOU with KATA to foster collaboration and enhance the national carrier’s market presence.

Financial and Technological Solutions:

  • Absa’s Regional Manager Fathiya Noordean discussed tailored financial solutions for travel agents, including a virtual secure card in collaboration with Visa.
  • AI applications in the travel industry were presented by Mr. Limoke, advocating for leveraging both expertise and AI to add value.
